Need for Speed: Shift is the latest itineration of the long-running Need for Speed series , by EA . Developed by Slightly Mad Studios , this title focuses more on simulation , rather that previous titles .
There is a single-player component ( the career ), a quick race mode and a basic online mode . The single-player part will drive you through 4 tiers and then to the NFS Word Tour (There is 0,0 plot in this game) . For every race you make , you earn 3 thing : stars , driver experience and money .
With the money you can buy new cars , or purchase upgrades for the ones you already own , nothing special here . The stars help you progress through the career , and can be obtained for having a podium finish ,or completing race-specific tasks .
The driver experience points (DEP) are earned for doing actions that classify under Precision (following the race line , having a clean lap or passing an opponent without touching him ) or Aggression ( trading paint , spinning an opponent out or blocking other cars from passing you ) . As you gain DEP you level up , bringing an RPG element into the mix .
New level bring you new liveries for your cars , as well as new vinyls and invitational events . Invitational events are races that are beyond your tier and car performance . They are somewhat harder than the normal races , but they pay a lot .
There is a heavy emphasis on the “true driver experience ” , the cockpit view being realistically done . As you collide with other objects , your view becomes blurred and the colors transform into simple black and white . The game also has tuning elements , through most users will stick to the standard liveries and upgrade packs that come as you level up.
The multiplayer mode provides up to 8 player online action . Users can tweak the options of they match ( multiple modes are available). This mode feels standard , having absolutely no element that shines out . Unfortunately , this is just a generic multiplayer mode .
All is all , if you like sim racing , or you are a Need For Speed fan , you should definitely check this game out . Hardcore simulation fans will probably find this game a bit disappointing , as the sim aspect appears done is a way to please arcade fans .
